Visionary Optics’ Europa scleral lenses are designed to be completely customizable. These lenses can be adjusted in four key ways to guarantee a unique, customized fit for every patient:
- Quadrant-specific landing zones
- Multi-meridian landing zones
- Toric landing zone
- Spherical landing zones
Our team uses our extensive knowledge of the technology, innovation and clinical research around scleral shape to help ODs fit Europa lenses efficiently— minimizing chair time and increasing patient satisfaction.
Over the years, ODs and patients have shared their Europa lens success stories with us. Here are a few of our favorites:
Dr. Mark Marciano, Marciano Family Vision, West Palm Beach, Florida
A patient first presented to our office at the age of 34. He had been a long-time RGP lens wearer due to keratoconus. His first visit to our practice was in 2015, when he complained of recurrent eye infections, excessive photophobia and general contact lens intolerance. After treating his corneal erosions, we discussed the benefits of scleral contact lenses and fitted him for Europa lenses.
The initial fitting of a keratoconic patient wearing RGP lenses for many years is often difficult. The uncertainty of corneal reshaping following the discontinuation of the RGP lenses makes initial lens selection more complicated. Base curve changes will be required as the cornea reshapes. It’s important to educate and prepare the patient in advance, as multiple visits are necessary for a successful first fitting of a scleral lens.
Having a partner like Visionary Optics, with their great team of consultants who provide guidance and recommendations for a successful fitting, has been critical for our office’s success in fitting scleral lenses for our special corneal patients.
The patient has been successfully wearing his scleral lenses for the past six years, with minor changes to the base curve and power, adjusting for his progressive keratoconus. His vision remains OD: 20/25 and OS: 20/40 with a central stromal scar in his left eye.
The patient has been so happy with his Europa lenses. He said: “My life has changed with the scleral lenses. Not only do I see like I did when I was 8 years old, I can also wear them all day long — something I could never do with my older RGP lenses. These lenses gave me my life back and allowed me to pursue a different career with the confidence of clear and comfortable vision.”
More Patient Success Stories
Dr. Renée Hanson, OD, from Swagel Wootton Eye Institute, ophthalmology centers with locations in Mesa and Chandler, Arizona reported:
“A patient of mine was previously piggybacking with RGPs, had constant keratitis and extreme photophobia. He would wear sunglasses 24/7. He came in for his one-week follow-up after his Europa scleral lenses were dispensed with wide open eyes and greatly reduced photophobia with clear corneas. His lenses fit perfectly! This patient is ecstatic with his new lenses.”
A patient of [Dr. Kristen Yates, OD, from Littlefield Eye Associates in Kansas City, Missouri] said:
“Prior to wearing the Europa scleral lenses, I had been wearing standard hard RPG contacts. As my eye condition, keratoconus, worsened, the lenses were more difficult to fit to my eyes. Eventually, I could not even wear a lens in my left eye, and for years, I was only wearing my right lens. Once Dr. Yates introduced me to the scleral lenses from Visionary Optics, I could once again wear lenses in both eyes and had excellent vision. I did not have to worry about lenses moving around on my eyes and causing irritation, and I could wear them for much longer periods of time. It has been a life-changing experience for me. Thank you, Visionary Optics.”
