Visionary Optics Expands Product Line with Europa Tangent

The newest scleral lens to the Visionary Optics Product line simplifies the fitting process without losing any customization options needed for more complex eyes.  The Europa Tangent provides a streamlined step-system fitting process, parameter independence, contour adjusting technology and a softer landing zone patterned after our freeform lens design (Latitude®).

Visionary Optics Announces Appointment of Director of Clinical and Scientific Affairs

Lynette K. Johns, OD, FAAO, FSLS, FBCLA,  joins Visionary Optics, bringing with her decades of specialty lens expertise in the clinical, research, and academic arenas.

Euclid Vision Announces Acquisition of Visionary Optics

The acquisition signifies Euclid’s recognition of the value of joining forces with Visionary Optics, the only company in the US that concentrates almost exclusively on scleral contact lenses. The union of these two companies increases each establishment’s ability to provide comprehensive specialty contact lens care to more patients globally.

Launch of the VibrantVue® Product Line

Visionary Optics launched the company’s VibrantVue® product line which offers high-quality, cost-effective products for eye care practitioners (ECPs) and their patients. Visionary Optics has collaborated with ABB Optical Group (ABB), a leading provider of optical products and business solutions in the eye care industry. Products include VibrantVue® Scleral Saline Solution, VibrantVue® Hand Prep Spray and VibrantVue®  Lid & Lash Care.

Scleral Shape Study Group – 2nd Publication

Dr. Greg DeNaeyer and Dr. Donald Sanders, in collaboration with Drs. Eef van der Worp, Jason Jedlicka, Langis Michaud, and Sheila Morrison, founded the Scleral Shape Study Group (SSSG) to further research into scleral shape as it impacts scleral lens fitting. Dr. Maria Walker has subsequently joined this group and a second paper on the strong correlation between corneal and scleral shape irregularities. It has been published in the Journal of Contact Lens Research & Science (2019): Correlation of Corneal and Scleral Topography in Cases with Ectasias and Normal Corneas.

Latitude® Scleral

Again, in collaboration with the POM team, at 2019 GSLS, Visionary Optics introduced the Latitude® scleral lens, the first such lens to be completely custom made to exactly fit the corneal and scleral surfaces based upon scleral topography (sMap3DTM) measurements.

Scleral Shape Study Group – 1st Publication

The first tangible result of this collaboration was a pivotal paper in Journal of Contact Lens Research & Science (2017): Qualitative Assessment of Scleral Shape Patterns Using a New Wide Field Ocular Surface Elevation Topographer describing a new classification of scleral shape based upon scleral topography data.

sMap3D™ Corneo-Scleral Topographer

Dr. Donald Sanders and Dr. Greg DeNaeyer, in collaboration with a team of engineers and software specialists, founded Precision Ocular Metrology (POM) to develop the sMap3D™ Corneo-Scleral Topographer. This collaboration has been highly successful because the team, from the beginning, had clinical, manufacturing, consulting, and research expertise in scleral lenses in addition to instrument development and manufacture.

Elara Scleral

Dr. Greg DeNaeyer and Eric Marshall again collaborated to design the Elara lens, a simplified design for use with normal corneas.

Europa Scleral

Dr. Greg DeNaeyer and Eric Marshall, our VP of Manufacturing & Lead Consultant, worked together to design the Europa Scleral lens. This design was the first 2nd generation product of a successful 1st generation lens (Jupiter). The growth and acceptance of our Europa lens was spectacular and now constitutes 85% of all Visionary Optics’ sales.

Visionary Optics – A new beginning

In 2010, less than a year after Dr. Breece’s death, the debt burden of Medlens Innovations became too heavy and the company ceased to exist; Visionary Optics was born with Dr. Sanders providing fresh capital.

Scleral Lens Education Society

The Scleral Lens Education Society was created. Our very own Dr. Greg DeNaeyer was a founding board member for this remarkable organization that continues to provide some of the best scleral lens education available.

Dr. Donald Sanders and Dr. Greg DeNaeyer continue the collaboration started with Dr. Breece

Drs. Sanders and DeNaeyer have collaborated for almost 10 years. With Dr. DeNaeyer’s clinical expertise and research experience with scleral lenses and Dr. Sanders’ expertise as a research-oriented ophthalmologist, the Visionary Optics team has been able to provide the scleral lens community with unparalleled product offerings and extensive data and research on scleral lenses and scleral shape.

Medlens Innovations: Dr. Donald Sanders again partnered with Dr. Breece

Dr. Breece again asked Dr. Sanders to partner with him in Medlens Innovations. Dr. Breece’s untimely death occurred six months after they became partners; Dr. Sanders took over the struggling company.

Dr. Greg DeNaeyer started working with Dr. Rob Breece

Dr. Greg DeNaeyer started working with Medlens and Dr. Breece to manufacture scleral lenses that he was using to manage patients with corneal irregularity. This was during a period when little was known about scleral lenses.  ‘Dr. Breece was way ahead of his time was very influential and a significant mentor to me, as we he was to many others.’ Dr. Greg DeNaeyer

Jupiter Scleral

Dr. Robert Breece designed and produced the first modern scleral lens design under the Company name of Medlens Innovations. Dr. Breece’s Jupiter design is the exact Jupiter design that Visionary Optics manufacturers and sells today.

Eric Marshall began working with Dr. Rob Breece

Eric Marshall answered a local job ad for a R&D manufacturing company and began working evenings with Dr. Breece producing Ortho-K lenses for Correctech. Shortly after, we started manufacturing other specialty Soft and GP designs. After a few short years of manufacturing lenses, Dr. Breece started to share his knowledge of manufacturing, design and consulting.

Correctech

Dr. Robert Breece and Dr. Donald Sanders partnered together to work on a new OrthoK design. The product was ahead of its time and the company encountered regulatory difficulties with the FDA and the company did not pursue approval of the lens.
